Thunder is a young guinea pig who came into the shelter after being found abandoned in a cardboard box during the torrential rain. He was with two other guinea pigs and all three were incredibly stressed. They all had signs of fighting with one another but poor Thunder had the worst injuries. He had open wounds all down his back which resulted in painful sores and hair loss throughout his body. He also had a scratch on his eye which was slightly infected. He was very quiet when he came in to us and didn’t have much energy. Based on his injuries and the behaviour between him and the other pigs, it is likely he was a stranger to the other two and had been dumped with the other two without proper bonding. This led to the others ganging up on him and bullying him. Once we separated Thunder, he started to thrive and his wounds healed and he quickly put on weight. He is doing fantastically now and ideally we would love him to go to a home where the family might get him neutered so he can live with female guinea pigs. Alternatively, he could live with gentle males or very young males. This little guy has been through so much and deserves the chance at happiness.
Thank you for choosing to adopt a small animal from the NPSCA. Please make sure to do your research on how to care for a small animal before considering adopting. We recommend guinea pigs be kept indoors with an enclosure that’s a minimum of 120 x 60cm for two guinea pigs with an additional run to exercise in with plenty of space for tunnels, hides and foraging spaces.
Guinea pigs require proper housing, bedding, food, enrichment, exercise and vet visits. Small animals are not pets for young children to look after, all the family must be on board to look after and care for any new pet coming into the home. We have seen too many being abandoned so please make sure that you are in a position to look after them and provide them with everything they need.
