Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween

Fireworks are no fun for pets, no fun at all - With just over a week to go until Halloween we’re sure you’ve all experienced bangers and fireworks going off in your area. Fireworks can be extremely stressful for pets and it’s time to put a plan in place to help keep your pets safe and help them get through this very difficult time. If you don't own a pet please be mindful of them and think about how frightened Halloween can be for them!

Make Sure Your Pet Is Microchipped

On the lead up to Halloween many pets go missing as they run off due to being scared of the early fireworks and bangers. Please make sure that your pet is microchipped with the microchip registered to you. Make sure that your pet has a proper fitted collar with an ID tag on it making sure your number is clearly visible.

Keep Your Pets Inside On Halloween

Please do not leave your pet (dogs, cats, rabbits) outside in the back garden on Halloween. Bring them inside and ensure that they have a safe, quiet place to go to and hide if they are afraid. A room where they can’t hear much of the noise from fireworks, bangers and the constant ring of the doorbell. Putting a radio or television on in the room can also help. Make Your Pet A Den - Many pets like to hide in a safe place when they are frightened. Building a den for them in a bedroom or in a room where they feel safe is a great idea. Make sure whatever room they are in the door remains closed for the evening. Frightened cats and dogs can run very quickly when and open doors are too risky!

Dress Up Or Not To Dress Up & Trick Or Treating

We do not encourage dressing your pet up for Halloween as many pets find this very uncomfortable and stressful. Please do not take your pet trick or treating, no matter how brave you think they are.  All the noise, activity, strange smells and loud bangs can be extremely scary for pets so just don’t do it. Just like Christmas there are lots of goodies and chocolate around. Please keep them away from your pets. Instead keep them busy with their own tasty treats and enrichments games, we have lots available on on online shop. Fill a KONG with peanut butter or your pets favourite treat - tip: freeze it to make it last longer.

Horses Get Scared Too

Fireworks and loud banners also frighten horses. Please make should they are securely stabled or moved to a different location if you know that fireworks displays will be held in the area.
