Health & Safety: Please follow all health and safety notices and staff instructions. There are clear guidelines that must be followed to ensure your safety.
Medical Matters: If any of you have a medical condition that we should know about, please let us know prior to your arrival.
Walking Dogs: There are strict guidelines and instructions when walking the shelter dogs in the designated areas. It is very important that you follow these instructions throughout the day.
Toilets: Staff and volunteer toilets are located in the main reception building.
Children: No children under 16 years of age are allowed volunteer for Public Liability and insurance reasons.
Dress Code: We advise you to wear suitable clothing and water-proof footwear for walking and working with animals. No open toe shoes or heavy jewelry.
Personal Belongings: Staff will show you where you can store your belongings in the area you are working in. The
DSPCA is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage of personal items.
Injuries/Accidents: All volunteers are required to use all caution and established protocols when working with our shelter animals. On the rare occasion a volunteer may get harmed, you must notify a member of staff immediately. An accident report must be filled out, as required by our insurance carrier, and must be obeyed. We have first aid kits throughout the centre.
Smoking: Smoking is not permitted inside any of the buildings in the DSPCA.
Confidentiality: The DSPCA respects the volunteer’s right to privacy and confidentiality. In turn, volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all privileged information to which they are exposed while volunteering with the DSPCA. We deal with cruelty cases that sometimes have to remain confidential for legal matters and photography may not be allowed in some designated areas. Please always ask a member of staff before taking any photographs for social media purposes.
Fire Safety: Upon notification of a fire or explosion by the facility PA system, PA tone alarm, fire alarm, or as directed by staff, all volunteers should evacuate the building immediately in accordance with the evacuation routes and report to the assigned or nearest evacuation relocation point or location designated at the time. The main evacuation point is in the car park in front of the dog training field.
