Mating season for Fantastic Mr & Mrs Fox

Thursday January 23, 2014

It’s the end of January, the winter is nearly over and our thoughts are of the spring and summer ahead but for some of our wildlife this time of year is more important than a bit of sunshine as it is mating season.

At the moment the foxes are mating and if you have foxes in your area you will probably hear them calling out at night (in Ireland it is said that this sounds a bit like the Banshee’s Wail).

Public opinion of foxes varies widely, with some wanting them destroyed, while others are happy to tolerate them and some actively encourage them.

Some people believe the fox population is increasing, but this is not the case.

Fox populations are relatively stable and self regulating according to the availability of habitat and food.  Foxes are classed as wild animals, not pests, and the DSPCA are looking for the public to have a greater understanding of how we need to live amongst our furry friends.

The b est advice we can give to people in relation to urban foxes is to read up on their habits. There are various websites including our own so have a read and most importantly enjoy having them around.
