From early Spring each year the Dublin SPCA animal rescue and rehoming centre receives hundreds of kittens from a few days old to several weeks old. Many come in without their mother and we have to take special care of them until they are 10 weeks old when they are vaccinated and can be brought back to our rescue and rehoming centre to be adopted.
We also have puppies who need to be fostered until they are 8 weeks old when they are vaccinated and can be brought back to the rescue and rehoming centre to be adopted.
When animals are so young, they have weak immune systems and are susceptible to germs and disease. In order to give these animals the best chance of survival, we must find foster homes for them.
The time commitment of a foster parent is between 1 to 10 weeks depending on the animal requiring fostering. Being a foster parent to kittens & puppies is one of the most rewarding things you can do.
We also have some special cases where older animals need to go into foster care for a while to rest up for a while, this can be because they need one-to-one socalisaton or to recover from illness or injury.
We provide you with all of the food, materials, food trays, litter trays and litter required to take care of the animals. And we provide you with training and Vet support should you have any questions or problems while you foster.
We fostered 700 animals during 2009 so we need as many foster parents as possible on our mailing list. The process is simple, we will email you with a list of animals needing foster with all their details and the duration they need to be fostered. You can then let us know if you would like to foster the animal, that way we match up the animal with the right foster home that suits both the animal and the foster family.
